Be the Change

September 2023

Adoptees are pros at adapting. The question is… do we do so willingly or are we forced to change?  I think its fair to say that adapting is a bit of both, at least for me it has been.

I’ve had times and experiences which forced me to view the world differently whether because of watching loved ones pass on or having to move to a new school, something I did every 2 years of my life until college where I decided I needed more time so I added a year to my college experience. Was I grateful? Yes. Because for the first time in my life this was a decision I made… for me… not made by others for me.

Deciding to start this Adoptee Counseling business was a decision I made after having been in the field of psychology for over 20 years, living and working to others expectations. What do I love about my new career move? Everything!  I am now my own boss, CEO, COO, CFO, creator, scheduler, networker, marketer… the list goes on and on.

This decision has allowed me to work at my own pace, sharing my experiences as an adoptee with other adoptees and their adoptive families and together we begin a journey which examines ways that have worked, ways that no longer work and ways to begin trying out new strategies that will work… on the client’s terms.

I am here to support other adoptees and their adoptive families begin this journey for themselves, with support, at looking at this idea and possible reality for change to begin…again.

In peace.

Abby Jacobson, Adoptee Counselor
